Large Wood Flower Box DIY

Spring is in the air here in Charleston! The weather has been warm and flowers are blooming everywhere. I love it! I’ve had this vision of building a large wood flower box to use either as a centerpiece or for general decor. And I decided that the large wood flower box would be perfect for using in our spring home decor!

Originally, I built this large wood flower box to be large enough to fit this plastic planter box inside of it, but then I found three, extra large jars while shopping at a cool, reusable material store this past weekend and decided to use them instead! I love that this large wood flower box can be used with the jars for indoor, home decor or with the plastic planter for outdoor decor!

You can find jars similar to what I used here.

The final size of this large wood flower box is 25.5″ x 9.25″ and it cost me less than $20 in lumber to build.

Here is the tutorial on how to build a large wood flower box DIY:

Materials Needed

1. Cut your 1×10

Using a circular saw or miter saw (or have your home improvement store make the cuts), cut your 1×10 to the following sizes:

  • (1) piece at 24″ (base)
  • (2) pieces at 25.5″ (sides)
  • (2) pieces at 9.25″ (ends)

2. Begin assembling your large wood flower box

Use a brad nailer and attach your first 9.25″ end piece to the 24″ base piece with 1 1/4″ brad nails. It helps to use a scrap piece of wood to hold the side piece up straight.

3. Attach side pieces and the last end piece

Attach one 25.5″ side piece to the base piece and the attached side piece.

Next, add your last end piece and side piece to complete your large wood flower box build!

4. Stain your large wood flower box

Stain and seal your large wood flower box if desired. I used one coat of Minwax Special Walnut and one coat of Minwax English Chestnut for my stain finish. Then, I finished it off with poly. For tips on how to stain, check out my post here.

Finally, add some jars or a plastic planter and of course some pretty flowers!!!

Pretty simple build right?! I am thinking I may add a chippy white paint finish to this flower box… And I also am thinking of using it as a wood wine trough for parties! How fun would that be?  So many ideas. How would you decorate with it?!
