Learn how to build a DIY garden hose holder for a hose or a retractable hose reel and learn how to upgrade your hoses!
Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Lowe’s Home Improvement. As always, all words and opinions are my own.
Our garden hoses were looking quite messy and they were difficult to use. They were always kinking up on us and all tangled. I don’t even know how old they are, I believe they came with our house.
We decided to upgrade both of our hoses and build a DIY hose stand for both of them! Here is the before and after of our two garden hoses on each side of our house.

Today I am sharing all about our new hoses that we replaced our old hoses with and a step-by-step guide on how to build these easy DIY garden hose holders!
This DIY project can easily be done in a day! It’s a great way to update your outdoor space.

Supplies for the DIY Hose Stands
I found everything that I needed for this project at Lowe’s! Most of the supplies were on sale for their 4th of July sale! Lowe’s always has a great selection of DIY tools and materials for any project I need to tackle!

Hose Upgrades
We upgraded one of our hoses with this Neverkink 50′ Hose which I am very excited about since there is nothing more annoying about a hose when it kinks up on you! It’s currently on sale for less than $20!

It was also really easy to attach to our water spigot with the ergonomic grip. And it has crush-resistant couplings with brass threads that prevent corrosion at the spigot too.

For our other hose, we upgraded with a retractable garden hose. I’ve been hearing great things about these and we finally decided to get one!
It’s an all-in-one unit that comes with a pre-installed hose and wall mount. We chose to mount it to our wooden hose stand so we didn’t have to deal with removing and drilling through our vinyl siding or concrete.
Both of these hoses are such a great idea and perfect for replacing an old, unruly garden hose!
Exterior Stain and Sealant
Since we used unfinished 4x4s for the DIY hose stands, we stained them with Cabot solid transparency, exterior stain to provide the best durability.

This Cabot exterior stain and color is the same stain we used on our DIY AC fence! I love how it looks and the quality has been great. Also, it’s currently on special at Lowe’s for their 4th of July sale!
I also needed a paintbrush to stain the post caps and these Valspar Precision and Control paint brushes are perfect for the job! They are on sale right now too for 50% off!

Fence post spikes
Just like with our DIY AC fence, to make this project as easy and fast as possible, we used fence spikes rather than a post digger and concrete to install our hose stands into the ground! This is a game changer!

How to Build a DIY Hose Stand:
Materials
- (1) 4×4 @ 8ft
- Fence cap
- Wooden stake
- Cabot exterior stain (we used black, solid transparency)
- Foam brush
- Paint brush
- Fence spike
- 2 1/2″ exterior screws and washers (3/8″ and #10 sizes)
- 1 3/4″ exterior screws
- Neverkink 50′ Hose and Hose rack holder or Retractable Hose
- Mulch or gravel
Tools
- DEWALT Impact Driver or Drill
- Miter saw (optional)
- Level
- Small sledgehammer or large rubber mallet
1. Cut the 4×4 to size for the wooden post
To cut the 4×4, use a miter saw or have the lumber cut at Lowe’s for you!
Cut the 4×4 to 38″ long.
2. Stain the wood
To apply the exterior Cabot stain in a solid transparency to the 4×4, I found it worked best to use a foam brush.

For the fence caps, it’s best to use a smaller paint brush. I used my Valspar paint brush!

Let the first coat dry and then apply a second coat.
3. Install the fence spike for the DIY hose holder
We installed the fence spike the same way that we did for our DIY AC fence.
To help install the fence spikes level, Brandon hammered a wooden stake into the ground to “pre-drill” a hole.

Place a scrap 4×4 board on the fence spike when hammering the spike into the pre-drilled hole.
Then, use a small sledgehammer to install the fence spikes into the hole. A large rubber mallet can be used as well which would be less noisy. *Make sure to wear hearing protection when hammering as it is loud!*

And here is a photo of installing the fence post spike for our other hose stand:

You can also use a level to ensure the spike is being installed mostly level during installation.

4. Install the 4×4 to create the DIY hose stand
We used our DEWALT impact driver to attach the 4×4 post to the fence spike. It’s also on sale right now at Lowe’s! We love it and it comes in handy all of the time, especially for outdoor projects!

Use screws through all three sides of the fence spikes where there are holes for them. We used 2 1/2″ exterior screws and we also needed a few washers too on some of the holes. Also, we used self tapping screws so no pilot hole is needed.

5. Add mulch, gravel, or stones if needed around the DIY hose storage stand
After installing the DIY hose stand post, we added fresh mulch around the base for a nicer look! Lowe’s had Scotts NatureScapes Mulch on sale for a great price so we stocked up!

We also had a few stepping stones leftover from another project that we placed in front of each DIY garden hose holder for easy access to the hose spigot.
You could also add a flower bed around the base too.
6. Install the hose holders and fence post cap
The final step is to install the finishing touches! We installed the fence cap using our DEWALT impact driver and a 1 3/4″ exterior screw through the hole on the fence cap on the top of the post. You can also use a little wood glue too!

We also used these screws and our impact driver to install the steel, wall mount hose rack on one of our DIY hose stands.

Then, we installed the retractable garden hose on our second DIY hose stand. We installed this according to the directions that came with it.
Note, if you have a larger model than us, you may need to attach a small 2×4 board to the 4×4 if your hose mounting plate is larger than a 4×4.
Here are our final DIY hose stands!

I love how these look and our side wall garden looks much more sophisticated!

How are you finding the retractable hose reel? My husband says they get bad reviews with the heavy duty hoses (we have the same hose as you). Just wondering if you are happy with the performance of it. Thank you!

We love it so far, it's a big improvement! I'm glad we went with the smaller model (100 ft) compared to larger models.
