Pull out trash can cabinets hide the trash can within a cabinet and they take up less floor space. I love the look and function of them compared to a basic trash can which is what we have been using for the past few years.

They key to a super easy installation of a trash can cabinet and one that functions incredibly smoothly and well is buying the right trash can cabinet kit as well as the right door mount kit hardware.

Wayfair has a great selection of pull out trash can cabinets from high quality brands like Rev-A-Shelf and Simplehuman. Wayfair also has a variety of sizes too, so you can find exactly what you need for your space.
Besides the size and brand, consider if you want a double trash can pull out or single trash can.
In our previous kitchen, we had a larger cabinet, so we were able to use this double pull out trash can by Rev-A-Shelf that we used for both trash and recycling. It was super easy to install and worked extremely well and smoothly for the 4 years that we lived there.
In our current kitchen, we have a smaller 15 inch base cabinet, so we installed this single trash can pull out. We also installed it with the matching cabinet door mount kit!
I love that it includes the trash can and a wire basket for storing trash bags!
Other pull out trash can cabinets include slow close hinges or different styles like wood vs metal and top mount vs undermount.
Another option, if you don’t have the cabinet space, is to get a freestanding tilt out trash cabinet, where you buy a freestanding cabinet that has a tilt out trash can built into it already!

How to Install a DIY Trash Can Cabinet Pull Out
The great thing about most of the trash can cabinets above is that they include a how-to video on how to install them on Wayfair’s product listing. And they all include step by step written instructions.
So, definitely review the product instructions for details on how to install your exact pull out trash can cabinet!
Below is a quick and easy tutorial on how I installed my single trash can pull out and matching door mount kit in our newly renovated kitchen peninsula.
Materials and Tools Needed
- Pull out trash can cabinet kit
- Door mount kit
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Mini level (optional)
- Adjustable wrench (optional)
- Clamps (optional)
1. Install the slide base inside of the cabinet
Place the slide base inside of the cabinet and make sure it’s square to the cabinet opening. We placed ours about 1″ inside of our cabinet face frame.
Next, we used a pencil to mark the 4 screw holes that attach the base to the cabinet bottom. Then, we pre-drilled holes for the screws.
Pull the slide out part out and attach the slide base with the 4 screws to secure it to the cabinet.
2. Install the rear basket if desired/included
Our kit included a wire basket for the rear. This is attached to the base with a screwdriver.
3. Install the trash can supports for the trash can cabinet DIY
The last step for the pullout trash can kit was to install the trash can supports. These just click into place! Super easy!
4. Attach the pull out handle or door mount kit for the DIY pull out trash can cabinet
You can either use the included pull out handle or use a door mount kit like I did and attach the pull out trash can to your cabinet door.
For the door mount kit, we used a screwdriver and an adjustable wrench to help tighten the screws for the hardware on the door mount kit.
Next, we used the included double stick tape and a mini level to stick our cabinet door in place exactly where we wanted to install it!
Then, we used mini clamps to help hold the door in place on the door mount kit while we screwed everything together.
Also, we used this gorgeous pull handle in the 5 inch size which is the perfect size and look for a pull out trash can cabinet! It matches all of our other kitchen cabinet hardware!
A DIY pull out trash can cabinet is a small kitchen upgrade with a big impact! I love that we eliminated our standard trash can.
Our pull out kitchen trash can is easy to use and it’s easier for our toddlers to use too!
