Quick and Easy DIY Fireplace Makeover for Christmas

Quick and easy DIY fireplace makeover just in time for Christmas!

A few weeks ago, I was thinking about the Christmas decor I was going to use on our fireplace mantel. But, since we moved in last year, I haven’t really liked the look of our mantel and the fancy trim work. I just feel like the style of it doesn’t fit the vibe of this house at all.

Honestly, I want to take the entire mantel out and all of the trim work and redo it. Further, the gas fireplace insert is missing and needs to be replaced so it’s not even working! I’d like to convert it from gas to electric when I give it a complete makeover.

But, with Christmas quickly approaching and our office makeover built ins in progress, we just didn’t have the time for such a big project right now even though I seriously considered it.

So, I decided a fresh coat of paint using paint we already owned would be the best quick and easy solution, for $0, to spruce it up for Christmas. The current paint was really worn, since it hadn’t been painted in 20 years.

Brandon knocked out the painting one afternoon. I decided to go bold and use Black Panther by Benjamin Moore.

I realized that I never took an after picture before decorating it for Christmas, so here is the final DIY fireplace makeover decorated for Christmas!

For the Christmas decor, I used mostly items I already owned. The wooden sign is a DIY Christmas sign project and same with the small DIY wood Christmas trees. The brass candlesticks are vintage.

Our quilted velvet stockings are from a Pottery Barn sale and I absolutely love them! The wood stocking tags are another DIY craft project. I did add these cute brass jingle bells that I bought this year.

Easy DIY Christmas Village for the Fireplace

Since the fireplace is broken, I tried to make the best of the situation and created a DIY Christmas village using these items:

I also used black landscape fabric I had on hand to cover the steel bottom of the fireplace. Here’s a look at the setup before I added the wooden houses:

And after with the Christmas village all lit up:

It’s not a roaring fire to cozy up by, but it adds light and warmth in an otherwise dreary, dark, and broken fireplace! Plus, the boys enjoy looking at it too and it’s totally safe!

To be honest, I hesitated to even share this entire fireplace project because I felt like it wasn’t the level of before and after makeover post that I love to share, and it’s rather simple. And I feel like these days, all you see are photos and videos of perfectly decorated spaces that have gorgeous, home backdrops or settings.

So, I guess I felt like it wasn’t good enough… And I was feeling frustrated with how slow our progress has been on renovating our new house.

But, I decided to share it because big home improvement projects take time to bring to life. And you can make the best of a space in the meantime for free or for a low cost with simpler projects if you just get a little creative!

And as long as you enjoy your space, that’s what matters most! It’s best not to rush the dreams you have for a space, so you can take your time planning them. I have found when I rush the big projects, more mistakes happen, costing more time and money!

I hope you have a merry little Christmas! I can’t wait to share the final reveal of our big office makeover with built ins at the start of the new year!
