How we added more storage to our bathroom with a cabinet over the toilet in our water closet!
Our primary bathroom was lacking storage space and had a lot of wasted wall space above the toilet in our water closet. It was the only extra wall space in the room since our bathroom is quite narrow.
We took advantage of the wasted space and built a custom size cabinet to fit the space perfectly! Although you can do something similar with ready to go cabinets too, more details below!

Here is a before and after of our water closet:

Install a ready to go cabinet for over the toilet
The easiest way to get extra bathroom storage over the toilet is installing a ready to go cabinet! You want to make sure they are the proper depth and around 8-10 inches deep, so they don’t stick out too far.
Here are some options I found that would look beautiful and provide more over the toilet storage!

- Over the Toilet Cabinet 1
- Over the Toilet Cabinet 2
- Over the Toilet Cabinet 3
- Over the Toilet Cabinet 4
- Over the Toilet Cabinet 5
- Over the Toilet Cabinet 6

DIY a custom size cabinet for over the toilet
If you want to DIY a custom cabinet, check out my tutorial on how to build a wall cabinet and 3 construction techniques for building cabinet doors.
Or you can order ready to go custom size doors online, such as Barker Doors or Fast Cabinet Doors like we did for our glass kitchen cabinet doors and our kitchen built in cabinets. Then you just have to build the cabinet box and not the door.

Here is a look at our cabinet being built. You can also see this in action on my Instagram reel here.

We had to work around our ceiling register vent cover. We replaced it with a modern vent cover which wasn’t as wide and allowed just enough room for a piece of molding. I really wanted crown molding along the top, but the molding didn’t stick out as far as crown molding!

Extra hidden storage, decor, and hardware
I love all of the extra, hidden storage this over the toilet cabinet added! We have plenty of room for toilet paper storage in this cabinet!

Also, I love how the cabinet looks too, it added character to this small space. We painted the cabinet to match our bathroom doors. So, now all of the doors are similar in color to our greige, double bathroom vanity!
We used Benjamin Moore revere pewter for the doors.
I finished the water closet cabinet off with these beautiful knobs in a honey bronze finish and vintage look artwork below it. And we installed my favorite, budget friendly, toilet paper holder too!
The full primary bathroom reveal is coming very soon! Here is one more before and after!
