In the spring we started making over our basic and boring dining room. What I thought would be a quick makeover ended up taking 10 months to finish. Is any room totally finished though?! I still have a few fun decor plans for this space!
Let’s take a look at the BEFORE and what this dining room looked like when we first moved in:

And another before and after:
I love all of the character and charm that we added! Let me share the story of this dining room before and after!
NOTE: I have a full product and project source list for everything in this makeover at the bottom of this post!
As soon as we closed on our house, we had all of the carpet replaced with laminate wood flooring. I also took down the outdated vinyl blinds with twisted cords.
We used our DIY farm table in this room which was actually our very first DIY build back in 2012! Although I did give it a farm table makeover at one point. And this is what our dining room looked like for quite some time:

The Design Plan
Here is the design mood board I created initially:
DIY window trim and vertical shiplap half wall
Earlier this spring, we started renovations by removing the picture frame molding, installing quick and easy DIY window trim, and installing a vertical shiplap wall using real shiplap boards.
The classic window trim and shiplap provides a more casual and cozy feel for this very lived in family space!
Peel and Stick Wallpaper
We just installed the shiplap 2/3 up the wall because I had my heart set on wallpaper in this room. I fell in love with this green/gray meadow floral wallpaper. It was a bit of an investment and took way more time to install than anticipated, but oh so worth it!
I absolutely love this wallpaper and it really adds a ton of charm and my style to the space! I have a step by step tutorial on how to install this peel and stick wallpaper!
Window Treatments
To add warmth to the space, I added customizable bamboo shades from Amazon. The quality and look of these bamboo shades are great, I have a full review of these bamboo shades for more details on them!
On our smaller window, I had a vision of cafe curtains and I am so happy I made that happen! Another charming addition to the space! I used these cotton/linen cafe curtains.
For the hardware I used the following:

Wooden French Style Dining Table
The focal point of our dining room makeover is our new french style dining table!
Determining what our new dining table was going to be is really what delayed this room makeover.
I really wanted to find a vintage, wooden, french style dining table. I searched for months on Facebook marketplace and local thrift stores. I just could not find what I wanted. I also really wanted a round or oval table. Again finding the right look was very difficult.
I did find this gorgeous Magnolia dining table and it was just the look and shape I wanted! However, it was out of my budget and a bit too big for our space.
After thinking about my options, I knew I didn’t want to try to DIY a table like this either. I really just wanted a table ready to go! So, I came up with a few options and finally decided to go with this wood dining table that fit the look of the room best.
It’s a very affordable dining table and made out of solid wood. The description says that it’s elm wood, but the table legs and apron look similar to white oak which I love.
It can fit 4 or 6 chairs around it. We had Brandon’s parents over for dinner and were able to fit all 6 of us comfortably around it!
Decor Details
Speaking of chairs, I used our thrifted Bentwood chairs! I’ve owned these chairs for years and I love them!
We did give them a fresh coat of white paint and recovered the 3 chairs with cushions using a cream linen fabric.
I love how they look with the table but would love to add a vintage style bench to the window side in the future!
The final decor details in this space include the new chandelier with fabric shades and WASHABLE rug!
I also replaced the outdated vent cover with a modern vent cover which was quite a controversial project on social media! You can read all about replacing our vent cover here!
Overall I love the charm and character we added to this space! I can’t wait to decorate it for Christmas starting next week!
I also have plans to add some artwork and vintage frames. There is definitely more to come in the room!
